Now, I know that, in Mass Effect 3, there are also a long list of missions ,but these are given to you in a coherent order and story structure, each major mission arc leading into the next.
Additionally, the "time limits" between certain collector missions (Freedom's Progress to Horizon and Horizon to the Collector Ship respectively) aren't very long, resulting in most of those two dozen quests being roughly stuffed inbetween the collector ship and the Reaper IFF missions (unless you want your crew to die because you're running around doing these superfluous busy work missions after they get abducted). There are 5, count them, 5 missions in Mass Effect 2 that are actually related to the Collectors (Freedom's Progress, Horizon, The Collector Ship, the IFF, and the Suicide Mission), compared to the over two dozen that you get from recruitment,loyalty, and dlc missions. Shepard is off running around on the Citadel or Ilium or on random backwater worlds while the Collectors are abducting and harvesting entire human populations.
The missions, with a few exceptions, feel so tangential and unrelated to the actual threat at work that it feels like you're wasting time. Giving the player both a recruitment missions and a loyalty mission for each squadmate (with the exception of Miranda, Jacob, and the two DLC squadmates, who only get loyalty missions) leaves you with an almost unwieldy amount of disparate missions to complete.Īnd I do mean disparate.
This leaves the game feeling like kind of a slog to get through, as you're just checking items off a list until the suicide mission. Mass Effect 2 has little in the way of structure, instead plopping a giant list of two dozen missions that it expects you to complete in whatever order you choose (and that order is almost entirely up to you with no real guide for when to tackle each item). And, after thinking about it, I wanna share my reason for why I think that is, and see if any of you have felt the same thing. But, whenever I do a playthrough of the trilogy, I seem to have the least fun when I play Mass Effect 2. Now, don't misunderstand me, I love the Mass Effect trilogy, 1, 2, and 3.
